icao_coverMultilateration Technology is Well Suited to a Wide Range of Applications.

ICAO Journal. Number 3, 2007. Volume 62. Pages 12-14, 32-33.

This article in the ICAO Journal explains how mulitlateration and ADS-B technologies work.  It explains benefits of these technologies such as enhancing safety while increasing capacity and efficiency, as well as the ability to cover the total aerodrome surface without being affected by adverse weather conditions.  Because of this, the vertical separation minima have been reduced from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet between 29,000 ft. and 44,000 ft.  These technologies also provide substantial cost savings, as they eliminate the need for expensive rotating radar antennas, replacing them with several small and inexpensive stations, strategically located to cover the same or greater airspace volume.

The article goes on to say that multilateration installations are now operating all around the world.  These applications range from long-range, high-altitude airspace surveillance over very large areas, to terminal area traffic monitoring, to precise tracking and display of aircraft and vehicle movements on the airport surface.  The article then states that ADS-B is now entering service and will gradually spread to worldwide adoption over the next 10 to 15 years.
