Alexandria, VA – September 16, 2005 – Japan's third major international airport, Chubu International Airport, also known as “Centrair,” opened in February 2005. Located in the center of Japan on a reclaimed island in Ise Bay, the airport lies off the coast of the Chita Peninsula near the city of Tokoname, 35 kilometers south of Nagoya, Japan.

With a long 3,500 meter runway, it is expected that Centrair will become a top ranked airport equivalent in stature to Tokyo Narita and Kansai International airports. Centrair was constructed as the new air gateway to the Central Region of Japan and it is expected to handle a high volume of passengers and commercial cargo as the Central Region is home to many of Japan's leading manufacturers, most notably the thriving Japanese automobile industry.

The airport was built on reclaimed land due to the common difficulties experienced today constructing new large airports inland, due to airport noise constraints. The site, in Ise Bay off the coast of Tokoname, was selected from several candidate sites as the most suitable location for an offshore airport. It is relatively close to Nagoya and the shallow seabed made the site suitable for reclamation.

“Achieving operational status at Centrair,on budget and on schedule, is a tribute and a testament to our engineering management commitment and expertise,” commented Rob Bradley, Rannoch’s Director of Systems Implementation. “The flexibility of the AirScene architecture, as previously demonstrated in other high density airspace situations over water, including the San Francisco Bay area, made for the perfect choice in Nagoya.“

The Centrair AirScene system uses a combination of patented multilateration and automatic dependent surveillance (ADS) techniques to track aircraft very accurately from the terminal area all the way to the airport surface areas.

“AirScene is a complete airport surveillance tracking and management solution,” stated Chris Holverson, Rannoch’s Program Manager for the Nagoya project. “For Centrair, the real time flight tracking system provides many useful applications including operations monitoring, flight arrival status, and overall airport management.”
